Jim Slavik wins Thermal Triple Crown Championship




Thermal, CA-  Jim Slavik wrapped up the 2017 Thermal Triple Crown Championship in dramatic style today driving his TruSpeed prepared Grainger Porsche 911 Cup. Jim managed to place higher than the faster GT3 class with a season ending 89 points.


From the first race in November it became apparent Jim’s tactical approach of solid consistent finishes was going to pave the way towards a good standing in the final weekend. However, prior to the last race, the team’s decision to send his engine in for rebuild would provide the start of a challenging weekend. Going into the final Sunday race the team began to notice the oil pressure was below recommended values. Crew Chief (and spiritual advisor) Tyler Tadevic was then forced to give Jim his options; race for the championship and risk losing a $40,000.00 engine or pack it up. Listening intently Jim leaned against the trailer, and with his head slightly tilted, closed his eyes while taking one last draw off the Camel (Turkish blend) cigarette, exhaled, and stubbed the remainder under his foot and said “#$%& it, we are going”. With that, the car was rolled to grid for the start.


While the engine problems would have made for enough drama, Jim wasn’t done yet. During a chaotic first lap Jim succumbed to a spin on cold tires. Undeterred he began a systematic charge back to the front with the final minutes closing Jim began to reel in the Cup car class leader, his son, Evan Slavik. Evan was driving his best race ever and wasn’t about to let the old man by without a fight, even as his lead began to look tenuous. However, the battle for house domination was not going to get to play out to the end as an separate incident on track brought out the red flag.


In Evan’s post race interview he mentioned a certain nervousness in seeing Dad in the mirrors. Quote “It brought back memories of 1989 when I borrowed Dad’s 930 Turbo and on my way to PCH to make a run up to Malibu I had stopped to offer ride assistance to two ladies from Santa Monica City College. We were blasting up PCH with the best of Lynard Skynard playing on the Alpine tape deck when I noticed the flashing lights in the rear view. Pulling over for the CHP, it was at this point, the thoughts of having to explain to Dad as to why his 15 year-old son was in this predicament began to sink in. Thankfully the story of needing to get the girls to school on time was enough to get a warning and me out of potential sticky situation. Today might be a good day to share that story with him”…….

Urry’s Victories and Consistency Secure Second Place in GT Cup Championship



                              Urry’s drive leads to tightest battle of the weekend at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway

Scores five victories in 2016 and secures second in the Porsche GT Cup Championship

(Salt Lake City, UT) – October 12, 2016 Sloan Urry wrapped the 2016 Porsche GT Cup Championship with a phenomenal drive, narrowly missing the victory by just six-tenths of a second over Corey Fergus. It was a nose-to-tail battle as Urry challenged the Rookie every race lap. The race featured three caution periods for on-track incidents, a total of 10 laps. The final caution came in the closing laps, presenting a green-white-checker challenge at the end. Laguna Seca is a technical circuit featuring steep elevation changes and 11 tight turns which make it known as one of the most difficult courses for passing. Urry stayed tight on the tail of Fergus’s #00 Porsche 911 and masterfully set-up the pass each lap as they exited turn 11 onto the front straight, but Fergus’s powerful new Porsche engine was strong, and he was able to pull just enough gap onto the straight to prevent the overtake. Sloan commented on the race, “I had a great battle with Corey every green lap and I am really happy for him getting his first win.” Urry continued, “It was close, I probably played it a little safe, but we brought the car home in good condition and we’ve locked up our championship position. It was a good race, and it’s always nice to bring home a podium for our team and partners.”

Urry’s consistency all season secured second in the GT Cup Championship last month at the penultimate round at Sonoma Raceway, but Sunday’s performance earned him an additional 98 points, bringing his season total to 1937, just 34 points behind the title winner Alec Udell, and 334 points ahead of third place finisher Corey Fergus. “Alec and Corey pushed me hard all season and we had a lot of great battles, every race was at qualifying pace” said Urry. He tallied five victories and seven pole positions and finished on the podium in 18 of 19 events in 2016. “It was a good year. I think we have a lot to be proud of. The TruSpeed guys worked hard and always gave me a reliable car. I think I improved in traffic management and took care of the equipment and combined, that led to wins and podiums at every race but one. Ultimately, we didn’t win the Championship and I am disappointed in that, but I am thankful to my team, TruSpeed Autosport, Porsche, and my incredible partners SecurityNational Mortgage and AVASIS. I had the opportunity to meet and race in front of nearly 1000 guests from SecurityNational and AVASIS this year, and that was a real honor.” Urry was awarded the trophy for his championship finish at the season ending banquet on Sunday.

Finishing Up Front: Wrapping up his most successful season to date with five victories, seven pole positions and 10 second place finishes, Urry has locked up second place in the GT Cup Championship.  With the exception of the second race in Utah where his fuel pump failed, Urry has completed every lap this season (563) without incident.

TruSpeed Team Owner Tyler Tadevic on the 2016 Season: “TruSpeed won three championships in the Pirelli Cup Series this year, and of course we had a strong season with Sloan in the PWC GT Cup series.  Sloan had a lot of great victories and strong finishes, and there were some possibilities that didn’t go our way.  It was awesome to watch his continued development as a driver on and off the track.  It’s unfortunate he had the wrist injury in the middle of the season.  Racing with a broken wrist is a huge obstacle, but he overcame it, and despite the pain, he maximized the situation.  I’m really proud of the job Sloan did this year.  Overall, it’s been a good season for TruSpeed.  We’ll look forward to defend our championships in the respective Pirelli Cup series next year with five to seven entries and we’ll be looking to make an announcement over the next 30-60 days on World Challenge program.  I want to send out a huge thank you to all of our partners, SecurityNational Mortgage, AVASIS, Metro National Title, Ironclad, Justice Brothers and Mothers Polishes, Wax and Cleaners.“


Sloan Urry on Laguna Seca: “I like this track a lot.  There’s a bit of nostalgia here for me.  This is the place where I inserted myself in to a high level of competition for the first time.  I’d spent a lot of time here when I was first with the TruSpeed team…learning the track and developing my skills.  My favorite section would be the left hander at turn six then up the hill and then the section all the way through the Corkscrew and down through Rainey Curve and turn 10.  It’s tricky but super satisfying to get right and a lot of time can be made there. We’ve struggled with rear grip all season, that will be an issue coming on to the front straight and exiting turn two, so we’ll work hard to remedy that here.

Sloan Urry Reviews the 2016 Season: “It’s a bit tough reviewing the season really, because I feel like we’ve left a bit on the table.  There have been a lot of great moments, especially the win at home in Utah.  It was my first victory at home at a pro-level in front of my sponsors and family.  That was awesome.  We had a handful of victories and completed every lap except for one mechanical, so that is a testament to the hard work from the TruSpeed guys and keeping it out of trouble on the track.  That being said, Alec (Udell) was tough to beat and I don’t think we uncovered every stone we could have.  Without question, the low for me this year was the first session at Barber when I realized how difficult it was going to be driving with a broken wrist over the next three events.  Finishing the season on a high note with a pole or a win would be great this weekend.  We made a lot of strides on the commercial side of our program as well, and I am excited to see the fruit that it bears.  SecurityNational Mortgage and AVASIS did an incredible job activating all year, hosting nearly 1000 guests at the track over the course of the season.  It’s such an honor to meet these guests, they come to the track pumped and full of support for our team, and they always leave as race fans.”

Sloan on Race One: “TruSpeed gave me a great car for qualifying. In fact, it was so good, we didn’t make any changes to it anticipating it would be a great car for the race. Half way through the race, it was survival mode. The temperatures were much, much hotter and the car was loose everywhere. I was pushing Alec as hard as I could, trying to get him to make a mistake, but he did a great job. I could see he was fighting the same issues as well. I think everyone was.”

Sloan on Race Two: “Not a bad finish, we were second again, but not where I want to be. For the championship we need to be winning, pretty much every race by now. We made a lot of changes to the car overnight and the car was still a handful out there. We’re missing something with the behavior of the car in these hot conditions. I am frustrated but always optimistic for the next event.”

Another Tally in the Win Column: Sloan scored his fifth win of the season last month at his home event at the Utah Motorsports Campus in front of hundreds of sponsors, friends and family. It was a stellar performance, he took the green flag from third and charged to the lead with a beautiful pass on the front straight, right in front of the pit row suite occupied by his supporters!

By the Stats: Sloan has won 31% of the races, started on pole 43% of the time and finished second in 50% of the events so far. With three races to go, he sits second in the Championship.

Another Championship for TruSpeed Autosport: It’s back to back weekends at Sonoma Raceway for the TruSpeed Autosport team. Led by team owner Tyler Tadevic, the California based team won the Pirelli Cup Masters Championship and the overall championship in the 997 Category last weekend at Sonoma.

Sloan Urry on the Sonoma Raceway: “I can’t wait to get back in the car – I’m pumped! Sonoma is one of the more difficult road courses, in that as a driver, you never really have a break. It’s pretty constant in turns, elevation changes and off-camber corners, with much of a straight-away in between, so it’s very busy. That being said, I love that track for those reasons, it’s technical, tricky and fun, especially the hairpin at turn seven and into the esses.”

Crescentini Sweeps Pirelli GT3 Cup USA Trophy Weekend in Utah

Haacker (Platinum), Rodriguez (Platinum Masters), Jensen (Silver), and Goldman (Silver Masters) also take victories in Race 12 at Utah Motorsports Campus

Tooele, Utah (14 August 2016) – Dino Crescentini secured a sweep of the weekend’s two races with his fifth Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA victory of the season Sunday in hot and sunny conditions at Utah Motorsports Campus.

The 45-minute, 24-lap, caution-free contest was the second of the double-header race weekend, part of the big Pirelli race weekend at UMC which included the World Challenge event. Temperatures peaked at 95 degrees F at the 2:45 PM MDT race start.

Crescentini took his No. 34 Crescentini Racing Porsche 911 into the lead going into Turn 1, getting ahead of pole sitter and championship leader Robert Todd driving the No. 52 BR Racing Porsche. He extended his lead throughout the race, finishing ahead of Todd and Competition Motorsports’ Michael Zuiebeck. Air Power Racing’s Desire Wilson, in her final competitive event, finished fifth.

“One of the things we all want to do here is keep it as clean as possible,” said Crescentini. “Robert (Todd) and I decided to fall into line at the start and race after the first couple of corners. I didn’t see him after the green so I went into Turn 1. I saw that he fell in behind me and I kept going from there. The car was perfect again and we hit the tire temperature we wanted exactly. With all the variations we’ve had – practicing in the morning, qualifying in the late morning, racing in the late afternoon – we’re chasing the good car handling paradigm and the guys nailed it. The car was as good at the end as it was in the beginning. This is all I want to do – I’m having the time of my life.”

“They threw the green a little earlier than expected, so Dino (Crescentini) actually had a lead going down the front straight,” said Todd. “When you go down the front straight here with a car-length lead, there’s not really a competition going into Turn 1 so I slotted in behind him. He and I wanted to get away from the field, which we did, but I got held up by traffic quite a bit and he was able to increase his lead. I am very proud of the entire BR Racing team; they gave us a great car. We’ve been consistent all year and it’s just myself and Michael Zuiebeck in the championship, so all I have to do now is stay in front of him.”

Platinum Class championship leader Tom Haacker, driving the No. 45 Mothers Porsche GT3, scored a relatively uncontested ninth victory of the season.

“I don’t know what my crew chief, Raji Olvera, does to put the car together,” said Haacker. “He does a magic spell or something. He’s great on the car, it responds every time I ask. It was greasy today but it was better racing today, since there was less debris on the track. We’re having some shifting issues, but it didn’t hurt us in the race and it’s something we can deal with after this race. I won’t be at Sonoma but I’m looking forward to the race weekend in Austin.”

Robert Rodriguez scored his third Platinum Masters victory of the season behind the wheel of the No. 69 Werks2/P7 Racing Porsche, in a close contest with Truspeed Autosport teammates Larry Schur and Grainger-sponsored Jim Slavik.

“I started fourth so to get the win is great,” said Rodriguez. “I passed Larry (Schnur) into Turn 1 under late braking – I tried to do that yesterday and was not successful! I got by Ray (Shahi) in Turn 1 as well, then carried through the race. I got hit from behind in Turn 4 late in the race and I started having fuel pickup problems and shaking in the front of the car after that, but I got in just ahead of Larry. I love this track, it’s a fabulous track and a wonderful facility. I’m really looking forward to all the wonderful things they’re going to do to it!”

The Silver class, comprised of Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4 Cup cars, enjoyed a vigorous scrap throughout the race, with pole sitter, BR Racing’s Kevin Woods, battling Keith Jensen in the Nolasport-prepared No. 51 Porsche Cayman, who got around Competition Motorsports’ Sean McAlister early in the race. The three cars spent 18 laps nose to tail, until Woods’ No. 94 Santa Cruz-liveried Cayman was felled by a flat left rear tire. Jensen brought his No. 51 Porsche Cayman home in first ahead of McAlister and Competition Motorsport’s Carl Toffelmire.

“It was a great race,” said Jensen. “Kevin (Woods) and Sean (McAlister) both ran a great race. I was lucky to get ahead of Sean and did my best to catch Kevin for at least 15 laps. I was heartbroken for him, to see him get the flat tire. That was a bummer.”

Competition Motorsports’ Steve Goldman led the Silver Masters class wire-to-wire for his ninth victory of the season in the No. 1 Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4.

“I hung in with the Silver class guys for most of the race, so I was very pleased,” said Goldman. “I could have hung with them the whole race but toward the end, I started getting alarms with the car overheating so I had to back off and short shift. The track held up well, though!”

Pirelli GT3 Trophy USA President Greg Franz was pleased with the weekend’s races at UMC and confirmed the series’ interest in conducting additional events at the Salt Lake City-area track.

“Despite the hot weather and a longer track than we normally run, it was a good weekend,” said Franz. “The change to Utah Motorsports Campus should bring significant improvements, so we are looking forward to being back here twice next year. Feedback from the drivers has been great, they’ve really enjoyed it and that’s all we want. There are so many races within each class – you can’t just look at the front. There is some fantastic racing through the field and we’re looking forward to Sonoma and Austin.”

Operated by Competent Motorsport, 2016 marks the 10th anniversary season for Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA. The series has three classes (Diamond, Platinum, and Silver) as drivers compete for five championships (Diamond, Platinum, Platinum Masters, Silver, and Silver Masters). The multi-class championship features the renowned Porsche 911 as well as the Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4, with all the competitors racing on Pirelli competition tires.

The penultimate race weekend of the 2016 Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA championship takes place September 9 – 11 at Sonoma Raceway, with the finale two weeks later at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
